Teej Festival Jaipur

Teej Festival Jaipur, the celebration of the monsoons (July-Aug), is celebrated all over the state with each region having its own unique touch. Kajli Teej of Bundi is different in several ways-while Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Shravana, in Bundi it is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra. The festival starts with the procession of goddess Teej in a decorated palanquin from the beautiful Naval Sagar. It passes through the main bazaars and terminates at Azad Park. The procession has decorated elephants, camels, bands, performing artists and colourfully dressed people.

This is the time to renew the ties of fidelity for married couples in Rajasthan, and special sweetmeats, and swing rides are characteristic of it. The people who gather here from surrounding areas also get to watch and participate in the cultural programmes that are organised in the evenings. It provides a very good chance to see performances by local artists from Hadoti region.
Though the main function of Teej is held only on two days, the celebrations continue upto Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna.

History of Teej Festival
This is celebrated in several parts of Rajasthan but most lively in the city of Jaipur. The festival is held at monsoon season and is not on a particular date each year. So, the Teej Festival is celebrated. Although, both men and women participate the festival it mostly involves women in the processions and preparations. There are also three types of Teej Festivals known as Kajari Teej, Hartalika Teej & Hariyali Teej. In Jaipur, the Teej procession is carried out over a period of at least 2 days in Old City of Jaipur.

Celebrations of Teej Festival
On this day married girls receive the sweets and gifts from their native home. Most parents send Lahariya which is a multicoloured sari, ghevar special sweet and other things used by girls for dressing and makeup. After having fast women pray all night. They get mehndi on their hands and sing the folk song and devotional songs. Some of the women and girls enjoy swinging on the swings hanging on the trees. Both men and women take part in the procession playing musical instruments and dancing to the traditional beats wearing vivid attires.

The ritual performed in Jaipur starts from Tripolia gate after passing through various markets it meets its destination Chaugan Stadium. Royal families of Jaipur decorate the idol of Parvati. The idol is made up of pure gold and silver. You can see folk dance, painted elephants, horses and decorated camels before the group of devotees.
